Founded - 1947
The longest
existing Arabian Horse Club in the Northwest was created in early 1947
by a group of Arabian Horse owners and breeders. The owners wanted to
promote their Arabians and felt a club was the best way to do this.
Their first
Arabian Horse Show was held in Gresham, Oregon, June 15, 1947. The
trophies were designed by well known artist and Arabian Horse historian,
Gladys Brown Edwards, who was also a Charter member of the club. There
were 24 classes offered. If you wanted a stall you made a reservation
for a Tie Stall. If you spent the night, most pitched a tent.
In the early years
the show, exhibitors and their horses were featured in the Portland
newspapers with articles and photos. Entertainers, using Arabian horses
were featured. The AHBAO show grew from 78 horses to as many as 700
horses entered. The earliest shows were held in Portland, at the
facility now known as the Expo Center. The show moved to the Oregon
State Fairground in the late 50's, as the show outgrew the Portland
facility. The first 55 years the dates were mid June. It was moved to
mid April to accommodate the expansion of the Region 4 Championship
Horse Show.
The AHBAO offers a
Two year old Futurity for Colts, Fillies and Geldings, High Point
program, Youth Scholarship, Newsletter, Horse Show and BBQ/Picnic/Trail
Ride. Each year other events are planned.
